Minnetonka Beach: village and resort history
Separate the municipal milestones
The city’s historical account places platting and the Minnetonka Beach name in 1883, village incorporation in 1894, and the current home-rule charter and city status in 1922. These describe different stages of local government and development; none marks the beginning of all human history in the area.
Hotel Lafayette and the club site
Lafayette Club’s own history dates Hotel Lafayette’s opening to July 2, 1882 and its destruction by fire to 1897. It dates the first clubhouse to 1900 and the present Spanish Mission-style clubhouse to 1924. Those accounts help distinguish the former hotel from the later club.
Read historical places carefully
A historic site, a surviving building and a present-day business are different things. When exploring a property’s history, seek records tied to that building rather than assuming the hotel’s story applies to every nearby house. Lafayette Club remains a private venue; a historical connection is not an invitation to enter its grounds.
