Orono’s township, village and island histories
Two governmental milestones
The city dates creation of the Township of Orono from southern Medina to April 9, 1889. It dates Orono Village’s incorporation as effective January 1, 1955. These are different events and should not be collapsed into a single founding date. The city attributes the name to Major George Brackett, who came from Orono, Maine.
Big Island has its own chronology
The municipal account describes an amusement park and later the Big Island Veterans Camp at the site now associated with the nature park. It dates the veterans camp to 1923 and describes a later city and watershed-district conservation partnership. Today’s nature park is not the entire island.

Municipal formation and individual site histories do not provide a complete account of Indigenous history or archaeology.
